Working from Home.
VNC is the simplest and cheapest method to access Biscount at work from home.
You should print these notes for reference by clicking on the Print button in your browser.
The Start
We have found a program VNC that is very simple to use for Remote Access and its
FREE and FAST!.
Click Here link to see more details about VNC
VNC must be installed on both the work and home computers.
Setting-up
Click here to download VNC now!
Or in Biscount's "Utilities">"Internet Menu" > "Remote Control (VNC)" - there is a button to install VNC
Install the full programme, as then it can be used as a viewer or a server.
Don't select the option to have it run as a "Service".
Do set a password on the Server that is useful but not a word that's in a dictionary as these are very easy to break (a word and a number like
RICHARD2 is nearly unbreakable)
You need modems connected to your computers. If you have a network at work, you must leave the computer with the modem and the server computer turned on.
If you have a modem that shares a telephone line with either a fax machine and/or an EFTPOS machine, you must turn off both fax and EFTPOS machines on that line.
VNC uses your Internet connection to connect from home to work. This means that if someone should call your home phone, they will receive an engaged signal whilst your are using VNC. One solution to this is to set "Call Divert" to your mobile while you are on line. "Call Waiting" functions MUST BE TURNED OFF otherwise
the modem will drop-out every time a person calls whilst you are on the Internet. Consult your telecommunications carrier to disable any Call Waiting facility. (Normally
it is #21#)
Why use VNC to run Biscount from Home?
You don't need to buy extra software to run Biscount from
home; VNC is all that you need. Other Remote control software costs around AU$260.
Backing up your data so you can work on it at home has many problems. Floppy discs develop faults and when you want to restore your work it is lost, unless you go home and get another copy. Backing up your data onto other media such as Zip drives is more reliable than floppy discs, but you must remember to take the Zip to work and restore the data BEFORE you start trading for the day. If you don't restore your work before you begin trading, the data at work will have changed and this means you cannot restore without losing the trading, so you lose the work you did at home. Using VNC avoids these problems as well.
Restoring data over existing files in your home computer can also create problems. When data is backed up at work and restored at home, customers DO have problems. Support calls on week-ends and evenings are at a higher rate than week days. Once VNC is set up and working, you avoid these problems.
Costs for using VNC vary depending on the plan you have with your Internet Service Provider. Check with your Internet company for usage costs and look for other plans if yours is too dear. You also incur the phone charges to connect to the Internet. You
are using the Internet to connect to your work computer.
With VNC installed on your Work and Home computers.
If you use Dial-Up to connect to the Internet at work, check that the "Disconnect a call if idle for more than" setting is turned OFF, otherwise your modem may hang up before you connect from home! To check this - double click on the "Modem"
(or "Phone and Modem") in the Control Panel then click on "Properties" then the "Connection" tab.
The password is case sensitive so UPPER and lower case matters!
Biscount Software recommends that you NEVER have screen savers, on any computers.
At Work - Each Time
Connect to the Internet
Run VNC Server at work when you are ready to leave for home.
Turn on the options as shown - if VNC doesn't show then <double-click> on the VNC Icon on the Taskbar.
There now is a new icon in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen near the time. This is the VNC Server Icon
Point your mouse at the VNC icon on the Taskbar write down the TCP/IP address (its a number like 204.132.5.126) - you need this to connect to work from home. NOTE - if you use Dial-up for your Internet connection then the number will be different every time you connect to the Internet, so you must record it EACH time you want to use VNC from home to work.
If you have a Firewall then you must trust Port 5900.
You can now turn off your monitor (to save power) but do not turn off the computer or modem. If VNC is on a network server computer, you can turn off any workstations to save power. (This is not essential.)
Then at Home
You should have a modem connected, Microsoft VNC installed and any "Call Waiting" functions on your telephone turned off.
Connect to the Internet then run VNC Viewer from Biscount's "Remote Control".
Type the TCP/IP address of the work computer in the "To" box. This is the address (a series of numbers) that you wrote down when running VNC Server at work.
Once you have typed in the address (including the dots), press Enter.
This connects to your work computer. You are prompted for the password to access the Desktop on the computer at work. This is the password of your work computer that you recorded earlier. Remember the password is CASE SENSITIVE so capitals and lower case characters matter.
You will see the desktop of the work computer on your screen at home. You now run Biscount as though you were sitting in front of the computer at work! You really are - just you are at home!
Speed
Issues
Note for Slow Connections - there are some settings in the "Viewer" Options that may inprove the response time
Remote access software appears to be slower compared to running Biscount standing in front of the computer. The computer at work is as fast but there is a delay in rebuilding the screen image at home. We suggest the following to reduce this delay:-
The speed of your modem dictates how fast remote access works. If you have a "slow" modem at either work, home or both (that is not 56,000 baud), then an investment of a few hundred dollars for two new modems (56,000 baud) will provide a considerable improvement in speed. (Biscount Software sells these modems)
The work computer's Desktop setting for resolution also affects the speed the screen changes are received from the work computer. The higher the resolution setting, the longer it will take to receive a changed screen. The resolution setting is also called "Screen Area" in Windows. To change this setting, right-click anywhere on your work computer desktop (where there is no icon) and then left-click once on the "properties" option. Select the "Settings" tab from the top and change the screen area setting by dragging the little box along the scale until you achieve the setting required. A setting of 800 x 600 is preferred. Also it is faster if you habe the "Colors" aet to "16bit"
Note:- Printing will be done on the work computer.
Good Luck! We hope this assists you in getting this very handy function working.
